Hey Guys, Im looking to get a reverse flow smoker on a trailer. I live in GA and wondering what brands y'all recommend. I know I have Lang in the state, but not sure if its worth the $4,300 price tag. I even thought about building one myself given some of the prices you see on some of these. I appreciate any input.

If you have the tools and knowledge go right ahead and build one yourself. If not then Lang is a pretty solid option. They've been around for a long time because their pits are well crafted (not perfectly so, but well) and they're designed properly. BBQ champs and caterers and vendors have been using Langs for years and for the most part they putting out some good BBQ.

There's a ton of amazing builders out there right now who are making some good pits.

-Johnson Smokers out of Ennis, TX
-Meadow Creek (many distributors across the country)
-Shirley Fabrications out of Alabama (2 year waiting list though)
-Lone Star Grills makes direct flow but with tuning plates to give a pretty even temp across all cooking grates

You've also got CustomPits who makes a reverse flow smoker but I don't know much about it. They're in Watkinsville, GA so maybe you should stop on by their facility and take a look at what they have to offer.

You can also keep your eyes peeled on the "For Sale" thread on this forum as used smokers come up for sale quite often. There's also a Lang Facebook group which is pretty much everybody buying and selling used Lang pits.

I did a search on here for review on the CustomPit guys out o Watkinsville. Nothing much, does anyone have any info or reviews on them?

I appreciate it guys. I kinda got sticker shocked when I started looking at the Lang smokers.

I will say that you get what you pay for. Most of these smokers are "lifetime quality" so if you buy a Lang and do minimal upkeep it will be something that you can use for the rest of your life, and likely even hand down. Kind of that "buy once, cry once" mentality but I think it's worth it in the long run.

I've got a Johnson Smokers reverse flow offset and I use it 5 days a week for my catering / vending BBQ company. It cooks like a champ and now I know exactly how much wood I need to add to make the temps go where I want them. I can cook at 200° all the way up to 400° pretty easily. I can cook in the rain, snow, sleet, etc and it just keeps on chugging along perfectly. I've cooked in 30MPH winds and full on thunderstorms and I it just works.

Keep your eyes open for used deals as you can usually get a pretty good smoker for a decent enough discount.

Ya they are not Cheap for a Nice one. Look for Used or possibly buy a backyard model and mount it to a trailer yourself to save a lil $.........

Lots of good RF pit makers already mentioned here...but you mentioned perhaps building your own. If you have the fab skills, you could build a custom rig from the ground up that has everything you'd want, for considerably less money than the retail rigs. It'd be a pretty tough project, though, for anyone who didn't have a good welder and the fab skills to do it right. If you want to go down that road, you might check out Smokerplans.net. They sell complete build plans for several different types of smokers, including an RF trailer pit. The way I understand it, their plans come complete with materials lists, cut files, and step-by-step fab drawings.

Just a thought...

I own the A1 Competition Smoker model. Good unit, and easy on the wallet. DM me if you want to swing by for a peek. She's about 6 years old but still turning out good BBQ.

Here's a light load:
