Default Seasoning refurb'd smoker/grill

Okay, I refurb'd a Brinkmann Smoke and Pit Pitmaster that I picked up for $20. Bright fire engine red, new wood shelf, new temp gauge and new wheels...plus 2000 degree primer with 900 degree paint.

Well, I seasoned it tonite with half a bag of lump, a few strips of bacon covered in bbq sauce and peanut oil on the grates (grates had some rust which I previously used a wire brush drill bit to remove). Well, there's a few hot spots on the surface paint that actually turned black. It appears permanent. It's not my main concern. When I primered and painted it, I did one coat on the inside of the door only. I'm also sure some overspray got inside the grill as well.

When the heat first got going tonite, the temp gauge was maxed out, so I suspect it got up to 600+ degrees. The temp gauge, even after a couple hours, was still registering over 350, so I'm pretty sure it got hot enough to burn everything out. However, for the first 15-20 minutes, I could definitely smell a burning paint odor. Not sure if it's from the inside, outside, or both. I just put another coat of peanut oil on the grates (one and a half hours into it), and now the burning paint smell is gone. Just burning off of the oil and the smell of the red hot lump coal.

Assuming this burns down slowly for another couple hours, do I need to be concerned about cooking on it? It's now been 4 hours, and the "burning paint" smell has been gone for the past few hours.

Some votes of confidence before I put food on her?

I'd sand the paint off of the inside of the door then give it a coat of vegetable oil. Canola oil works good, spray the entire inside of the grill and heat it up again but only to about 300* for a couple hours.

I would guess that you have all the paint burnt out.
If you are undecided,do another burn.
It certainly is red.

don't forget to season the cooker on the inside with oil. no need on the firebox since it gets too hot, but getting a good seasoning on the cooker walls can really help too.

Thanks for the comments. I ran a second burn with a couple 80% lean hamburger patties inside. There's no weird smell....and yes, the burger tasted awesome! I couldn't resist and I was starving.
