Lightbulb Improvised charcoal-fire control in a side box...

So my side-box smoker's side box is a little small for putting a charcoal box in. I'd love to use one of those charcoal boxes that has the coal snake around so that all the coals don't all burn at once, but I don't think one will I have to improvise.

I had one of those metal smoker-chip boxes and I just pushed it to one side in my side-box. I wrapped the coals around it with some wood chunks and lit a few coals in a chimney. I dumped the lit coals on the back end of the trail of coals in the side box minion style. It took a while for the smoker to come up to temp, and after a while the fire caught up with all of the coals and the temp spiked out at about 350, but it did maintain the mid 200s for a couple of hours really well. Here are some pics...

I like it! Gives me an idea or two to play around with.
