Pellet Envy wins the Bull Peni$ walking stick, and the $3000 cash. Tuffy Stone of Cool Smoke came in second. A group of 12 judges scored every turn-in, with the low score dropped. A perfect score would be 396, Pellet Envy scored a 392. The lowest score was a 368. Awsome brisket from top to bottom from 12 great brisket cooks.

Very impressive. Maybe if we all close our eyes and squint our faces and all think real hard and send congratulations to Rod with our minds at the same time he will hear us.......

David,
You worked your tail off this weekend. Was a pleasure seeing you again. I was pretty proud to come in third in that group seeing as I rolled in at 5:40a the day of the contest probably 12+ hours later than everyone else.

I am glad you were able to make it in time. It was very busy Friday and Saturday for me, but I got to slow down a little on Sunday. We had fewer teams than we were hoping for but MAN, what a bunch of GREAT cooks. Thanks and congrats to everyone who entered.

From top to bottom, the point spread was 24. Now in a regular KCBS contest where 180 was a top score, that would be a 12 point spread for 12 teams. That is close! However, Rod damn near had a perfect brisket score. Out of a 24 point spread, there were 10 points between 1st and 3rd (where I was). That's leaving the field behind in an otherwise tight race. So, the real question is... how spectacular was that brisket that Pellet Envy turned in? I'm guessing it was damn special. Oh... and he won the brisket category the next day, too. Any question that he didn't deserve Chest to Chest? He was the big man on campus.

![]() How we do it---All 12 entries are lined up on a table to be judged for appearance. The judge is allowed to only give one 9 for appearance. They pick their 9 then go through the other boxes and score. In appearance we use a decimal, judge only gives one 9 but can score others 8.9, 8.6 etc. Then the 12 judges take the sample to score taste and tenderness using the standard KCBS scores of 2 to 9. (Future contests it has been decided we need to use first decimal point scoring on all categories.) There were no bad briskets turned in, some were a little better than others, but not enough to score down, that is why we will go to a decimal place score for the future, when something is not quite a 9 but better than an 8 without a decimal place most judges score up, with a decimal place it could be an 8.5. Hope this explains a little better for you.
