Default What is a good, reasonably priced instant read thermometer?

I am looking for suggestions for an instant read thermometer that is affordably priced. I know the Thermapens are nice, but if I spent that much on a thermometer, I wouldn't like where my wife would put it.

I bought one of the Big Green Egg instant read thermo's, basicly it's a knockoff of the T-pen that reads temps in about 8 to 10 seconds. I've still got that around here somewhere but I use my two super- fast GREY Thermapens all of the time.

I have researched this question many times in my homebrewing hobby and found that there are no substitutes for the Thermapen. There just isn't another product out there that works as quickly and accurately. There are cheaper options with adequate accuracy but they lack the speed. There is your trade-off.

That one is more like what I am looking for. It is a Thermoworks too. Does anyone here use the RT600C, or is the Thermapen the one everyone uses?

I have a thermapen but I also have one of these

http://www.thermoworks.com/products/...t/rt301wa.html

and would highly recommend it. It is made by Thermoworks and is on sale right now for $19.

I bought one of those when they were on sale last year just to have as a backup to my Thermapen at competitions. I used it once to test it, but when I need to check temps I grab my Thermapen.

I had a very similar question a while ago and ended up getting this Taylor thermometer. It was $11 and free shipping on Amazon. It has worked great for the past month. It is about 7-9 seconds for a readying, but for the price it is great. Taylor makes pretty good stuff.

I bought one of these 1 month ago and have used it for a few cooks. I'm very pleased with it so far. I don't understand what the fuss is about the Thermapens, which I think are quite expensive, and not evn waterproof like the RT600c. Maybe because I have not used one, I can't relate to the cult following it has.

For almost 25% of the price, I'm okay with waiting another 3-4 *seconds* to get my temp reading

I just ordered a thermapen myself. The only reason I could justify it was because I could also use it in home brewing, as JMSetzler said.
