Ray ,I had several lengthy discussions with her and I dont believe she would give a nickel back to her own Momma. I think that the most of the folks who are not happy with the 37 other rules she handed out after our checks were cashed would have grumbled a little but still entered had they known this before .A few would not have but I think most would of. I guess it is what it is.

Getting back to the beer question, it doesn't bother me. Drink little if any at a contest so I really don't care. On one hand I like it because it makes it less likely to put up with drunks at 3:30am like I did last weekend. On the other hand, I think it would be good to support the contest. With so many up in the air you got to take what contest you can and support them.

That's a steal compared to the $35 per case we have to pay at the big Rodeo events down here.

As stated before, what ticked me off was being notified after they got the checks/applications.

I can live without the beer, not a huge problem, I may in fact buy a case just for all the others that come by. What got me was the whole check out thing. It feels like I have to bring a note to get out early... What's next, do I have to raise my hand to go to the john?

While she does seem to want to work things out, I'm having serious thoughts that this might not only be our first comp there, but also our last unless things change drastically. As for getting our money back, I got the free ride at the banquet so no money changed hands. Knowing what I know now though, I wouldn't have traded for it like I did.

Ah... But they aren't saying no beer. They are saying you can't bring your own, you have to buy ours due to liquor license restrictions. So there is no guarantee that you wouldn't have to deal with drunks at 3:00am. In fact, with the entertainment going until 1:00am it is probably more likely that there will be drunks wandering around at 3:00am.

To the original question, if there is absolutely NO ALCOHOL, being a beer drinker
myself, and as I do this for enjoyment, and as no beer would be to take away
enjoyment, I dont do them. I harbor no grudge; just dont do those comps. We
have a few 'round here that say "no booze", but in actuality they host BBQ contests
and chili cookoffs regularly. As long as you're keeping it in the little red cup, and
nobody is walking around knee-walkin' drunk, you're good to go. My two favorite
comps are like this. Then, as far as having to purchase their beer, it really depends
on whether I like their beer. I haven't seen any comps like this yet, but it wouldnt
offend me to have to purchase beer from them. No worries.

Does beg a question though: Do they sell/sponsor single malt scotch, at a discount?
If so, I'LL TRAVEL!!!!!

Started competing in chili cookoffs back in the 1990's and have competed in more than I care to count. I became a CBJ in MiM in 2005, then MBN and in GBA in 2010. I've probably judged 130+- BBQ comps (sanctioned and unsanctioned) over this time. That said, I really enjoy competing more than I enjoy judging, and hope to get back to doing 4 or 5 a year in the near future.

Being a homebrewer, it's pretty easy to guess my own feelings on this situation. Hold nothing against them for having it that way but, they should provide a list of the rules when handing out the applications so everyone knows what they are signing up for. It is their first time doing this though so I am hoping there will be improvements in the future. Had really wanted to do the comp in question seeing as it is one of the closer ones to me but, bad timing and then lack of funds made it not possible. At this point though, am thinking maybe there was a reason for things not working out.

Is it just me or does this thread have nothing to do with a case of beer and everything to do with poor event organizer communication at one specific contest?

What is wrong with calling a spade a spade?
