Attended the Florida BBQ Association Judge class today. I was more than duly impressed!
They covered a lot of stuff and also had three champion pitmasters cooking for us. WOW! I used to think I made some pretty good Q; until I tasted theirs. Chit man, I got a lot to learn. And they said that this was not their best, like they would enter in a comp. Yeah, they started cookin at midnight. ![]() ![]() I would recommend a class like this for anyone, even if you don't intend to enter a comp.

Don't really know much about KCBS class, but was told that the rules are a little different.

Jim , Amber and I are certified GBA judges and we have a great time judging comps. It was recommened that we judge before we compete have a great time with it but go hungry, you wont leave that way.

I've taken both. The only real difference between the two to me are simply the scoring. FBA uses half point scoring (8, 8.5, 9, etc). There are some minor rules differences such as a minimum of 6 individual servings in the box for KCBS and 8 for FBA. In fact the last couple of FBA contests I judged, we DQ'd cookers at each one for only having 6 servings. Another point, FBA lets you table captain after judging five times rather than having to take another class with KCBS.
I have judged a fair amount of both contests though there are not a lot of KCBS contests in the area since I moved.

I don't believe taking the table captain class is a prerequisite for being a KCBS table captain. At the contests I've judged, the reps have been happy just to have table captains as opposed to one of the judges doing double duty.

According to the reps I've talked with you have to judge ten contests and take the class to be certified. Many times, if they are short on captains they will let experienced judges do it but most prefer to have certified table captains.
