Default New BGE Cast Iron Grate setup

Hodedo and I got these new 18" grates for the Webers, WSM's and Large BGEs. They have three removable sections for either getting to coals without lifting the entire grate, or replacing with an optional griddle insert. Today was the first time I used it. Makes a really nice setup for the BGE.

They are sold by Rolf here. Shoot him a PM.

They also have a custom little handle for easy grate lifting.

Sits fine on the plate setter, but could be an extra 1/2 inch more diameter. Just a little bit less diameter than my original grate.

I have used my several times. They work GREAT. And the removable sections make adding chunks of wood super easy. Makes killer steaks. I plan on popping in the griddle insert this weekend (if the weather warms just a touch) and making some skippy burgers! work the grilled onions right next to the burgers, Genius!

Hey Todd, A custom grate cradle may solve the diameter problem. Tom (tjv) has a new angle iron roller and it can roll angle "leg in" which creates a little shelf for a grate to set into. The other leg (the vertical one) prevents the grate from shifting around. Look close in the top picture, and you can see what I mean. Since you are not going for additional height, all you would need are some little legs to match up with the dimples in your fire ring (sort of like the ones on the spider) and you would be good to go.

I clipped these pictures from The Ceramic Grill Store site, and this model is make for a mini Egg, but it might be worth a call to see about rolling a larger one with different legs for your application.

Will it also sit on the fire ring? I would mostly use it for direct grilling instead of sitting on the platesetter legs.

By the way, the best way to reapply the seasoning after a couple of high temp steak searing sessions is a low and slow with some ribs or pork shoulders.

First thing I thought of when I saw them. After the onions you can grill up the bread. Mmmm I think I need to make some burgers too.
