Default WSM modification

I modified the charcoal ring on my 22" WSM. I added two pieces of diamond plate to the charcoal ring. Now I can stack the same amount charcoal higher rather than spread across the bottom of the ring. I have better control of the smoker temperature with the higher stack.

Nice mod!

I think you may end up loosing space in the long run though. What you're gaining in height your loosing in the circumference of the ring.

i would use expanded sheet metal. then i would fill both sides. thus i get the same idea of stacking while still getting the full use of the ring as the coals would still light the rest through the expanded metal. great idea.

Excellent workmanship. But I'm not really clear on the why. I've got two WSM's and controlling temp has never been an issue, so I don't get your rational for making this change.

The best way to reach me is with email:

IMO the 22" WSM's are fuel hogs. I've been using the ring from one of my 18's in the 22.

I've used the 18" ring inside my Cajun Bandit for rib cooks and still have tons of leftover coals.

I even made a ring out of a steel container that @ 11" dia. that I use for shorter cooks that is a little higher but works very well too.

I got a replacement center section for the 22" WSM that will be modded to run a rotisserie and the small rings will get used with it.

Swamprb is correct. Your mod is a great idea! Don't pile high, reduce the amount of coal.
