Default Custom Smoker questions

Me and my roommate are helping out a friend by working to "customize" an old gasser that he has into a smoke n' grill essentially. we already have a basic idea of what we are going to do but i thought i would ask you guys for any ideas you may have that we could use as a firebox. we plan to cut out a portion of the side and then weld our "box" on like a regular offset. we were thinking of using a keg and cutting the top off and making a door etc.

just wondering if you guys had any other ideas that might be easier cause we are finding a keg harder to acquire then expected...

thanks guys

You could maybe use a smaller steel drum, like a 30 gallon drum. Or just get the firebox to a Chargriller smoker. You can buy the firebox alone I believe from the company.

I think Wal mart and home depot carry just the firebox only for chargriller style grills. You'd prob still have to drill some holes and prob use high temp silcone gasket maker to prevent massive leaks. Just my .02 cents. good luck and post pics.

we thought about the small drum and figured it would be too big for the size of the grill he has, thus the thought of a keg cause its 15 gal more or less. thanks for mentioning the walmart thing Jeep cause it sparked a memory of a little table smoker i saw at the grocery store that will work perfectly for our purposes.

as far as a gasket goes, we were going to weld it so i wasnt too worried about leaking. only time will tell but we will adapt as necessary.

thanks for the input guys
