Default Brine question ?

I have completed 8 or 9 smokes. I have brined for 2 hours with a simple brine ( 1 gal H2O, 1 cup salt, 1 cup sugar ) everything I have BBQ-ed. Is this a good recipe for a beginner ? I have only done 1 brisket that I did not brine. I had it marinading in Claude's brisket sauce for 2 days. Can you guy's advise on what to brine or not to brine ? So far I have smoked briskets, whole chickens, pork loins, turkey breast , short ribs. Any brining advise would be helpful. AND no... I do not carry around a bag of matchlight.

what ever u do dont use sugar in a brine with beef. i opine it gives it an "off" flavor.
change the salt to kosher and sugar to brown add 1 tbl of gebhardt chili power.
for overnight brines i'll cut the kosher and brown to half.
