And this year’s Blue Springs Barbeque Blaze-Off winner is – a Blue Springs team.
Not that it hasn’t happened before, it has, but Pam Buck, recreation superintendent for the city, said it’s been a while and that it’s always good to give the award to someone local.
“Winning this event has always been on their hit list,” Buck said of Pork Pullin Plow Boys, a two-man team made up of Todd Johns of Blue Springs and Randy Hinck of Concordia. “This is the biggest contest they’ve won.”
As grand champions, the two men now have bragging rights for having snagged the big one.
“This was their sixth year competing in this event, and in the past they’ve always scored high here,” Buck said, adding that the team has won seven grand championships since they started cooking in 2001.
“And it’s also special for them because this was the first one they’ve won together,” Buck said.
Johns is the chief cook, while Hinck serves as a partner. The BBQ duo and the sauce they stirred and slopped, brushing on several kinds of meats, lifted them past the other 80 teams.
Second place, or the reserve champions, went to Vincent Smokin’ Kettle, a team from Prairie Village, Kansas.
