Default Horror Story

So, we make plans to have another family spend the weekend at our place and decide to do ribs one night. We get some pork, and since everyone is doing beef these days, I pick up a couple racks of those also.

The time comes, and I go out to start the fire up. I come back in and my buddy has seasoned all the ribs. Not really a big deal, but I wanted to try a Barbefunkoramaque salt and pepper rub. Oh well, no biggie.

After a while we take the meat out and put it into the pit. I adjust the vents so that I'm getting sweet blue, but then my buddy walks over, puts a way too big log into the fire, and closes everything down. Within minutes, the nastiest gray smoke you can imagine is coming out of every crack in the pit. I kind of look at him funny and ask what he's doing (remember this is MY pit) and he says that he really likes the flavor of smoke.

Well, we spend the next 6 hours with me trying to get some sweet blue back and him walking up behind me and choking it all back down everytime I change something.

The end result was the type of bbq that makes your tongue go numb from all the smoke build up.

I swear, it was the strangest thing. I didn't know what to do - after all he is a very good friend so I didn't want to start anything ugly. I tried to explain blue vs gray smoke, but no dice.

Anyone else ever have a control freak shadow you while you're trying to cook?

Your place?

Your Pit?

Your ribs?

I'd have chopped his arm off. There is no freaking way that would have happened. Dude, you have way to much self-control...

Ditto ! Farkin with someone's pit would be a good way to get your nose broke around here. Do understand the frustration, but you need to be polite and not allow that to happen brother.

He wouldn't have touched my pit more than once. I believe in being polite but someone doing like he did is completely rude. I might have been polite enough to say, "Well that's interesting. Maybe sometime you could have me come over for a cook at your place. But tonight we're at my house and I'm doing the cooking."

Oh who am I kidding? I'd say KEEP YOUR EFFIN' HANDS OFF MY PIT, DUDE!

When your tongue goes numb it's no longer smoke, but lots of nasty creosote. Your buddy really farked up a lot of expensive and potentially good food. I would not invite him to my house anymore. If you do invite him back, tell him to keep away from your pit or else.

You are one lucky dude...
You could be in jail and
your friend could be in the hospital.
I would invite myself over to his house, let him buy the food, let him cook it,
drink all his beer and leave early. You could always pick up a mcribs sandwich.

That is the one and ONLY time I would use a grill fork. Coupla stabs in the hands'll take care of the problem. No one and I mean NO ONE touches my cookers, same goes that I don't touch anyone elses. Four things a man has you don't mess with:

1)Paycheck
2)Wife
3)Honor
4)Any barbecue cooker he owns

I don't know how big your pit is - but if it happens again, it sounds like a good time to do a burnt offering (j/k). Seriously, unless you asked for his help, he should not offer any... If he wants "extra smoke flavor" give him a bottle of liquid smoke right next to the ketchup he probably wanted, too. LOL
