Default New to the forums and I to have the BBQ bug

Found the site by looking for info on the UDS and boy did I evver find info.

So far, im fairly new to smoking as I have only been smoking on a weber 22 inch grill and have smoked only two brisket, 1 shoulder, 1 wild salmon, and Im not going to call my attempt at bbq'ing ribs bbq or smoking, they were just carboard with some seasoning.

I was looking at getting a wsm but I am very interested in making my own UDS.

I have already bough parts for the UDS and im still lookng for the perfect barrel.

I do have one question about the UDS I am making. I bought some .5 inch plugs to use for the air control , 6 for the bottom and 6 for the top. I doubt Ill have to use them all but I was wondering if .5 inches per will be exceptable. And well one more question do either lowes or HD have expandable metal for the fuel holder, I was at HD but I did not see where it would be located in the store.

Welcome to the addiction... Remember, there is no 12 step program for us!!!

There is nothing better than serving que off a cooker you made!

To be honest, I think you are going a little overboard with 6 in-takes. I mine has 4 - 1" in-takes and I don't ever recall having more than 2 open at once. You may also think about using a valve rather than plug on one of the in-takes to allow for fine tuning.

As for the expanded metal, I know both stores carry it. Look near the welding supplies.

Good luck on the build and don't forget the pron!

BTW... Nice to have another ILFO (Illinois Folk) around!

Thanks everybody, I have found my expanded metal, and will probally go with a ball valve after I get the thing up and running.

Im fairly new when it come to BBQ, except for the steaks and brats(survival food), so I hope to learn alot from here and would like to do some comps in the future.
