I seldom watch FN anymore; Good Eats and DDD is about it for me.
Did anyone catch "Fresh Air" on the radio today? The guest, writer Michael Pollan, noted that FN now has the highest ratings of any cable network, yet American are cooking at home less than ever. We're spending more time watching others cook than doing it ourselves... He also offered up some thoughts about some of the hosts and the types of shows they do. You have to start here and click on one of the "listen" icons. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=13 Chris |

That's it right there. I think Alton Brown hit the nail on the head when he was talking to Melissa when they were working on her pilot. She couldn't get anything right and he was talking to her while someone was working on her make-up. He said " At this network we can talk concepts all day long, we can talk recipes, it's a personality thing." I ain't gonna lie, I watch food tv some. I got a couple of favorites but every time I watch a program I get more sick of it. If it isn't about cake or pastry competitions it is the same old crap. Just a different person standing in a kitchen cooking something I will never try. Even the meals are becoming the same. Always a salad, appetizer, main coarse, and a drink at the end. Then the star takes a bite and groans like a '80s porn star.

I remember that show too. I think it was on Fine Living network. It was not a real good show. Host was a bald black dude from Toronto, or something like that. He was the whitest black dude on tv. No soul...

I remember that show, it was funny. Actually I thought it was a pretty good show. I grew up in a largely poor black neighborhood, and that guy was not like the old BBQ guys I knew, but, he was entertaining and I would say, largely middle class, but that was fine for what he was doing.
I do not believe that the place near home back then, Catfish Wally's, don't need no teef to eat Wally's beef, would be nearly the draw that guy was. Wally's had the standard of brisket that I am searching for now.

I always like Anthony Bourdain and Alton Brown (the AB Boys). Bourdain because I believe he's the real deal. Brown because he explains WHY things happen when we cook ... food science.
I'm in the same camp as others here with Emeril. Before him, FN was awful. Unwatchable. Emeril brought it to life. I _really_ miss Iron Chef ... not that American atrocity, but the original Japanese one. That was great, great entertainment and the cooking on those shows was amazing. "Oh my gosh, Kenji-san, I think he's putting squid ink and shark's cartiledge into the ice cream machine!" I, for one, would love to see old reruns of Jeff Smith, the Frugal Gourmet. He was fairly big for a PBS cooking guy in Seattle ('cause that was his hometown). I also want Jacques Pepin and Sara Moulton. And, let's have a series of specials done by one of the AB Boys on BBQ ... touring the country sampling and showing real BBQ being made. Maybe each show is coupled with a here's-how-you-can-try-this-at-home segment ... including recipes. GOOD ones.

I am sure you are right, but I just feel if you are going to have this talent search the talent should at least have a weekly show...

Rick, I would watch your show. But then, back in the 80's, my wife patiently stood by while I watched a man hand plane a piece of wood for a half hour in Williamsburg, VA. There is something about watching a true craftsman ply his trade with expertise, precision and pride that intrigues me. And what ever happened to Graham Kerr, "The Galloping Gournet?"

Jeff Smith's career went into the toilet after he was sued by some people that say he molested them. He died in 2004.

Its a shame they are saddling her with the $10 dinner. That really limits what she can do. Alot of the stuff she did on NFNS doesnt fit the mould
