Default Campfire at comp?

Are you aloud to have a camp fire at comps? We have half of a drum left and were thinking of using it as a fire ring. I want to make sure that it wouldn't violate any rules though.

I know I saw a fire ring at Hudson Valley last year, but ask your comp organizer, I doubt if you have it contained that it would be a problem.
Fire pits have grown greatly in popularity, so let us know what you find out

I've seen them before at comps. If the comp is held in a campground, then no problem. Might check with the contest rep first.

Prior to last year's American Royal, I would have said use your best judgment depending on space, parking, moisture conditions - etc.

However, some knuckleheads beside us at the Royal had an open campfire pit and about 200-300 bails of straw about 15 feet away from the pit. As I was minding my pork butts that night, I saw some younger people (guessing ages of 15 and 20) throwing armfuls of straw into the pit and flames were reaching well above the height of their canopy (maybe 8 feet from the pit).

That could have went bad real fast. Not wanting to provoke an issue, I called the security number and they come over to put a stop to it.

Just tell them you are pre-burning your wood/coals.

I suspect you're better off asking for forgiveness than permission. I bet their knee jerk reaction to a request is going to be NO. However, if you set one up and are well behaved, they might never say a word.

I would say it depends on the area the comp is being held... If your in the middle of a baseball diamond, use your best judgment...

I don't know why, but that made me think of Return of the Jedi when Luke burns Vader's body...... I am such a geek.

I do not plan on having one that big. just a small one, so the kids can roast marshmellows.

Aside from asking the organizers, put a grill over it and call it a BBQ!

Oh and campfires make me drunk too!!

Lots of folks used to pre-burn their wood before adding to their smokers.

I say go for it. Be quiet and respectful. Tell them it's a pre-burn fire. Ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

Note: most BBQ contests have a rule against open pit cooking, so don't let them think you are doing that.
