Default Weber Smokey Mtn vs Big Green Egg

I am looking to purchase another medium with which to express my love of pork and am looking at these two. THey would be for personal use, not competition, however, I may enter my first one sometime this year once my Q'ing skills are honed. Yall are the experts, in head to head,, taking everything into account, price , quality of Q produced etc, which one comes out on top????........I hope I don't cause any civil unrest with this question.

Can't beat the functionality of the Egg, WSM's are good all around but can't quite do all the Egg does. The cost is quite different. My opinion a great all around combo would be a Large Egg and a UDS.

I like the WSM and we use one on our comp team. As stated the egg can do a little bit more but...costs much more. If $ is not a factor in your decision get the egg. If you are trying to save a few bucks, and still want an excellent cooker...get the WSM.

remember to factor in the issue of portability.

Taking everything into account, the WSM wins if just for BBQ and you may plan to transport and compete.

If it's for personal use, cost not an issue and you want to cook more than just BBQ, then BGE wins IMO.

Both are great... buy what fits your budget, capacity and function (home vs. comp or both)

The egg is more fuel efficient and flexible. It is also about 3 times the price and 5 times the weight. As stated before, It depends on your budget and how you plan to use it. Once that egg is in place, moving it is usually more of a chore than it is worth. Also consider how concerned you are with wow factor...the WSM might be impressive to those in the know about BBQ, but the egg is just plain cool no matter who you are.

I'd have to go with two of each!

And at the very least a drum!

Now go to the Egghead and bullet forums and ask the same question-I'm sure you'll get different answers.

If I could easily transport the BGE's to comps...I'd own all BGE's... That said...the WSM's do very good BBQ at a fraction of the cost and weight. Let your back and wallet be your guide!

We lug 3 large eggs to comps. We made travel crates. We use a potlifter to move eggs from the nest into the crates. Then a dolly and ratchet strap to secure to the dolly, we wheel them into the trailer. So porrtability is relative to the situation. Are they heavy, yes. Can they break, yes. Are they worth it, yes!

Why not ask "Chubby Hubby" who took big wiener at Willie. He comp'd on a BGE.. Did anyone even see how he got it there driving an asian sedan?

I'm curious about this too. Don't have WSM, but I've eaten pretty good Q off of them. I do have a large BGE, and am not terribly impressed. Yeah it uses less fuel and can grill, but as others have pointed out, the price and heft factors should be considered. Also consider this: Is there anything that an Egg can do that you can't do with a WSM and a Kettle, take up less space, besides use less fuel, or break your back and wallet?

Maybe bake bread or other items?

I've had my egg for about 5 years or so, and wouldn't part with it. I also have a kettle that I love to use on occasion. I'd like a WSM just to have one for the variety.

But my egg can do anything I want it to, anytime, in any weather.
