fire ring

I have 16" grate about 3" from the bottom of my barrel and my intakes are about 2.5" from the bottom.
I need to build a fire ring tomorrow and I'm looking for material ideas tonight?

it's getting dark out, the barrel is in my shed.. It's not painted very ruff looking lol..

It's called "expanded metal." You will probably want the 3/4" size.

Lowes and Home Depot should both carry it. it is more expensive there though. I got mine from a metal yard for about $40 a sheet (8'x4'). Actually a friend and I went in on it together and had the place cut in in strips for us.

Ditto that. If you have a metal retail store buy it there, it is cheap. Buy some gloves to handle it with. The edges are super sharp after cutting!

As mentioned, your best bet on cost is to go to a scrap metal yard and ask for a scrap piece. I got some for about $20.00 and had enough for 3 baskets. I cut it using a Makita Grinder.

It does not have to be pretty, just functional.

A must is safety glasses and heavy gloves!!!!!!!!!

#9- 3/4 expanded metal to be exact.
I saw a small sheet yesterday at Homer's for $26.00!
It was about 17" x 28" and was much lighter than #9.

that's a little high [plus I don't need that much! I don't think our local scrap yard would know if they had any or not. They are so unorganized I don't know how they keep track of anything..

The HD around me sells it in 24" x 24" squares for $20.

This is all I could find today, a 12"x24" sheet of 18ga 1/2". I know you said I'd probably want the 3/4" but this is all I can find around here.. I even called the other stores and this is it.. Either they don't have any in stock or just the same size. I called the scrap yard and they said they didn't know if they had any or not. Usually when they get any they just cut it up so it's not like they save it off to the side. They said I was more than welcome to come out and look but it's been raining for about the past three days and I'm sure it's a mess there..

Can I get by with what I have?

this sheet cost me $10.03 after taxes...

with 1/2" you're more than likely gonna have issues with airflow as it will get clogged from the ash. and with 24" long you're only going to get a diameter of about 7 1/2"... but i will let others speak to this as well...
