Default How to build a smoker from upright freezer?

http://springfield.craigslist.org/hsh/1097423453.html

Saw this today and it looked like it could be a good smoker, I just have no idea what it takes to change one over and what to really look for in a freezer to build a smoker. Any info would be great, thanks.

Well I noticed that the inside is not galvanized, but it is plastic. What is the cost involved in converting this? I can do most of the stuff myself. No welding or intense metal working. I just have basic tools and knowledge.

you might could make a cold smoker fish, cheese ect... just pipe the smoke to it far enough away from heat source for smoke to cool down so it won't effect the plastic for bad taste

What kind of smoker? I started a gravity feed smoker using a fridge as a shell. I abandoned it. basically all that is good for a smoker with fire is the metal. the insulation is combustable and they have a lot of plastic. The seals also melt. I have seen websites that use propane burners. Try a google search on "The Afterburner" Allied Keneco also has info on electric set up. My opinion is if you don't know where to start don't spend money until you have a plan.

I guess I was assuming I could just put fire underneath it and slide out racks inside. I knew the plastic liner would need to be removed and replaced with metal, but its looking like it could be an expensive project. Nothing like a UDS.
