Default BBQ Nation Museum Exhibition

http://www.thetruecitizen.com/news/2.../News/006.html

National curator to research in Burke
By Elizabeth Billips lizbillips@yahoo.com

The curator of the "Barbecue Nation" museum exhibition will be taking notes in Waynesboro Saturday.
Donald Rooney, along with Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) judges from all over the southeast, will be in town to attend a table captain's certification course, taught by Instructor Vickie Ownby of Sevierville, Tenn.
Rooney, who is curator of Urban and Regional History at the Atlanta History Center, says he's attending the course as part of an effort to capture and document America's love of barbecue.
Although Rooney was already a "lifelong lover of barbecue," he took it a step further for the project and began working with officials from KCBS and the Memphis Barbecue Network and immersing himself in sanctioned competitions.
To better understand what happens behind the scenes, he became a certified KCBS judge in 2007. While he hasn't judged enough events to train as a table captain this Satur- day, Rooney says he'll be observing the class for research.
The 4,000-square-foot exhibit is expected to open in Atlanta in May of 2011, and, according to organizers, will show how barbecue impacts America … from sanctioned competitions to shabby roadside pits and chic eateries. The exhibit will also probe regional distinctions from Texas' beef-based favorites to the mustard based sauces of the Carolinas.
Although Barbecue Nation is still in the planning stage, a number of museums have already expressed strong interest including the Texas State Museum in Austin and venues in Memphis, Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky.
