Default Best way to fix Weber lid on UDS!

My Weber lid leaks like crazy on my UDS. What's the best way to fix the problem? Right now I am wrapping with aluminum foil under the lip on the lid. No way can I do an all night cook the way if fluctuates. Help!

Pictures would help?

But even without them, I'm sure cutting the rim off of an old kettle and inserting into the top of your UDS will solve most of the problem.

Yeah, we're good but we aint brain readers. I think I know what your implying as I know that Weber lids often dont fit the barrel with a decent seal because they're basically the same diameter as the top of the barrel. So the lid basically rests on top loosly/wobbley.

Some people beat out the edge of the lid so it seals better. Some people cut off the top couple of inches of the Weber kettle and stuff it into the top of the barrel.

But here's what I'd do; make a strip of sheet metal about an inch wide and 71 inches long (with 71" = pi times 22.5; rounded up to the nearest inch).

Attach this to the rim of the Weber lid with pop rivits and add a fiberglass rope and/or red silicone gasket if it still leaks excessively.

Kinda complicated but a permanent and not too ugly fix.

It depends on your drum lip. If it was a closed drum that you cut the lid out of, or an open drum with the removeable lid. Every drum manufacturer is a different size. None seem to be standard. A little patience, metal working skill and a few tools should be all you need.

First check to make sure the drum end is round! measure across in 2 different places, they should measure the same. If not, adjust the long side by grabbing across the drum and pulling towards you, or lay the drum down and push down on the long side. Move around the drum, measureing as you go and adjust accordingly.

Next make sure the upper lid , on the drum, is flat all the way across, grind or file any bumps in the lip. Hammer and dolly any wide spots in the lip it'self. Test fit the lid, make sure that it is round also. Square beg in the round hole theory. Massage. Is this a donor lid or one you use on your kettle? You may want to drill a extra exhaust hole in it, for extra draw. See how it works first then mod from there.

oh and hello from your neighbor to the north of you

Well. I would take a picture but the kids all have the gizmos. I need to see where the problem is . Either the drum is out of round or my lid is. Once I determine that then I'll go from there. Can't right now, ribs are on. pork and beef.

Might not be either of those things.

My lid didn't quite fit the top of my drum so I cut off the lip and sanded down the edge. I get 18+ hour burn times

What I did:

Set the weber lid on a concrete slab and with a hammer pound the curved down edge until it is all flat against the concrete. Then place this on top of your barrell and pound the edge back down to fit the top of barrell.

With the Weber Donor strip being thinner than the drum, wouldnt it just take on the shape of the drum once you secured it to the drum top?... out of round>?

I think most who do this just bond it with rtv. Worst thing to do is the old trash can slam if you dump it. That is how I ovaled my first one.

I'm trying to figure out why anyone would ruin a perfectly good weber by placing it on a UDS

I just use the seal ring that comes with the barrell. Once I've loaded the meat on I seal it tight for the night with my Dewalt cordless.
