Default Just finish reading the UDS thread....

WOW... ok WOW

A few things

1. I found a source for food grade barrels in central MO at a good price.

2. I have NEVER welded or worked with metal before... sorry was never in shop class

3. I want a UDS for X-mas

So is there anyone in TN, AL, MS, AR, or MO that knows how to build one?

I travel all those states for work so I have no problem dropping off a barrel and materials. How much should a UDS go for???

If you cooked on UDS at Competitions what have your experiences been?

I would love to have 2... I know from what I have read that you can never have enough but how many do I need for KCBS cooks 3???

If I can not find someone who makes these great things how hard would it be for a newbie welder/metal worker to build it on there own?

Thanks for your input.

No need to drop it off and have it built. Do it yourself. You will appreciate it more in the long run.

I am still in the process of building my first UDS and I am having a ball with it. I welded my basket, but it is totally unnecessary. If I had it to do again (and I will ) I would just wire it. Everything else is just measuring and drilling holes.

For the intakes you can do the whole ball valve thing or just get something to plug the holes. Personally, I am going to add the ball valve, but I am going to give my UDS a run before I install them. I plan to use refrigerator magnets to cover my intakes the first time out. I want to see how it runs before adding all the other stuff.

Trust me! Give it a shot and post some pics of your work. There are plenty of folks here that will provide advice if needed.

If you can drill a couple holes, tighten a few nuts and bolts and know what bailing wire is you can build a "no weld UDS". If that is beyond your scope, re-read the Ugly Drum Smoker thread. Seriously- its not that difficult!

Two different options for a basic, no-frills, comp worthy, ASSKICKIN' UDS!

Yeah!!! what Brian said!!! I'm mechnically disabled, can't weld etc...
no need to...Use bolts for your basket, I tied mine with stainless steel wire...used the biggest drill bit I had, filed the rest out to fit pipe nipples...
Smokin Gator has a plan for a no weld also...

It's easy I built two yesterday. No welding, like the others say wire ties and drill holes.

Do you get close to Louisiana? I would be glad to build a couple for ya.

I use two in competitions and have had calls in 3 out of 4 contests this year.

PM me if you're interested.

Would you mind revealing your source for barrels? If I could get one at a decent price, I would love to build a UDS.

Here is my UDS. No welding required. If you don't have a liner to get rid of you can build it in an afternoon.

Buy the barrel and make it yourself. Its not that bad.

Cool

I built one and I am a nerd. I bought a grinder and cut the top off. I had a drill so I bought a 1" hole-saw and made three holes for intake. I bought a 48" X 7" piece of expanded steel and rolled me a fire pit. I used the both grates and my lid from my weber. I put three pieces of fire brick on the bottom that the fire pit rests on. I drilled 5 posts for the meat grate to sit on 7" from the top. I burned the barrel for 24 hours. I washed and oiled her down . Now , I'm cooking ribs and learning about my new baby!

As to where its a little small town just north of Springfield, MO. I'm heading that way in the next week or two. They were $10 a barrel. Apple juice was what was in some Veg. Oil in others. When I get the address and his inventory left I will post it here asap.
