Default Big Green Water Pan

So I came home to put some spares on for tomorrow night (other thread). I got the spares trimmed (St. Louis), loaded some lump into the egg, and fired it up. It was hard to get the egg to temp for some reason, but I finally did. Threw the ribs on and the egg started losing temp again. I stuck the ash tool in the bottom to make sure it was clear and noticed about 1 1/2 inches of water in the bottom of the egg. FARK!

Well, the ribs were already on, so I took my shop vac and sucked as much water out as I could. I got most of it. Now I'm fighting the temp and figure I probably will be all night.

I guess I really need to get that rain cap, huh?

My wife just pointed out that we're under a tornado watch until 11:00 p.m. Joy. If these spares turn out good, it'll be a miracle.

that's a poached egg!

maybe even a cover. anything will help keep out the rain. i wheel my eggs into an outbuilding when they are not in use and i usually have them under a canopy when outside.

the ceramic rain cap comes standard with the egg, ya know

Yeah, it came with one 10 years ago when the wife and her ex bought it up in Minnesota. I think he may have gotten the rain cap in the divorce. That bastage.

I'll be picking one up this week. My uncle is sort of a retired, auction-going, pack-ratting MacGuyver. I may have him sew me up a cover for the egg and table too.

a plastic baggie on the top under the metal top would keep out the rain. i always wondered if rain would leak in at the gasket??

Good point. I'll do that until I can get my rain cap. We'll see how well the cap does on its own for a while.

Use foil, and it'll stuff the fire out fast and not melt.

Another good point. That way I can "cap" it right after tonight's cook without having to wait.

Nice story. But I would have kept this one to myself because without pictures it didn't exist.

True. True. :)

They looked so promising when I started out.

Then there was the water pan incident and the great rain...

Before the big rain, I got 2 1/2 hours in at 275°, then about an hour and a half foiled, still at 275°. Then I pulled them and put them in the oven (still foiled) for a little over an hour (still at 275°). Now they're resting comfortably in the fridge waiting for me to get home and grill on some sauce tomorrow night.

I have high hopes.

Even before I started Q'ing, I never liked liquid smoke. I'm rather proud of that. :)
