I use chunks for the offset, but when I use chips in the grill I just throw em on. They do burn up pretty quick though, except in my electric smoker where they just smolder.

Did use chips once in the CG, but I put em in a cast iron smoker box to keep 'em from burning up right away.

Both..on top will ignite quick and give quick smoke. I also imbed in the charcoal/lump so they will heat up and smoke slow during the cook. For what it is worth, that is just they way I do it. AND I LOVE ME!!!! LOL

I use chips when I grill steaks or burgers or whatever...when I smoke I use chunks.
