You are in a great location to find a used smoker. Being that a quality smoker can easily run a thousand bucks and more, used is a great option A decent smoker will last a lifetime so a used one is a reasonable option. I live out on the left coast where BBQ isn't as popular and I had to look high and low even for a new one of decent quality. Check www.craigslist.org or eBay for used ones if you want to save a buck. I'll let others who are more familiar with new ones guide you on that part.

Hi, Hoo. Glad to see you on the board.

Porky, If West Palm is anything like O-town, all ya got to do is go cruising in the neighborhoods and you'll find lots of good off-sets for sale.
There seems to always be a bunch with for-sale signs around here.

I am not looking to break the bank with this one. I will be taking the Backwoods with me when I move to WPB permanently fall of '08, however I will be selling my Bar B Chef at that time and I will need a repalcement. In a nutshell, I am looking to spend $500 and under, I have not ruled out a WSM or BGE. I am looking for a place to go and look to see what they have.

People often overlook or under rate the WSM but even for twice the money it is one of the best smokers on the market. I think it has to do with the fact that it looks exactly like a lot of other cheap, little, funky smokers that don't really work all that well. Believe me it, it is a professional grade smoker. The fact that you can do an unattended, overnight burn in it should put it up there near the top of your list. It's biggest draw back is capacity but you can always get two and how much space do your really need? For under $500 it would be my choice and for that price you could get two. I had my first experience with them last year when I entered a local competition with a friend who had two of them. He builds and sells an aftermarket rig that makes them portable and easier to stoke. It is all permenently mounted on a two wheel dolly. You just grab it and go. We would have had one hell of a time with moving my offset even though it has its own wheels. I think another reason people pass on them is because they don't look manly enough. You don't have to do any log splitting or use a chainsaw. Just charcoal and a few lumps of hardwood.

Hey, I resemble that statement! I am the resident expert on looking for a smoker. God knows I troubled you all enough when I was looking for mine. But I did find my dream boat smoker on eBay for $250! I love that big ol' chunk o' steel Brinkman Stillwater. Looking back over the whole ordeal I probably should have gotten a WSM to start off with but then that would have been doing it the easy way. You know me, I have to turn over every rock in the field.

Hilo-
"It's Ahola Friday, no work till Monday"......My sister-in-law lives on Ohau and calls me every Friday and sings those words to me. I am seriously considering a BGE, how many racks of spares can fit on it? Is there a model bigger than the large, like extra large and if so does it make financial sense to get one? I am not locked in to spending $500 it is just the amount I am using at this time.
