Thumbs up Big Ed's Barbeque-Long Beach

This place just opened 3 weeks ago and the locals are just starting to find the place. It is located at 631 East Park Ave in Long Beach. They don't have a website but the menu is pretty extensive for a BBQ joint, nice bar and large portions. Pricing is moderate and the food is real good. The St Louie's ribs are meaty and flavorful but light on the seasoning, the beef ribs tasty and the brisket had flavor but was a strange consistenicy. The wife had the smoked Prime Rib that was excellent. The side dishes need some work and we told that to Big Ed--cole slaw was taste less, the baked beans were common, however the sweet potatoe fries were very good as was the corn bread. We did not have dessert.
As with any new restauant Big Ed needs to work out the kinks but I will be going back in a couple of weeks to check it out again.
Porky rates *** out of five stars due to it being a new place. Check it out, it is well worth it.

Interesting that two new places are in Long Beach, and Bad Bob's is opening up in Oceanside http://www.badbobs.net/home.php..

Did you ask Ed what kind of equipment he was smoking on ?

Did it seem like he was jumping on the BBQ train or has some legitimate experience cooking BBQ ?

Big Ed's is using Cookshack equipment and yes it seems like he is jumping on the band wagon. His place has the feel of Al's out in Bayshore with the brick walls and the atmosphere is similar but the food is dispensed out of a closed kitchen.
Bad Bob's is not open yet but I stopped in yesterday, had the day off, and chatted with the owners Vin & Mike. The boys showed me the kitchen, they have a new FEC 100 and and older model FEC along with an Old Hickory rotissirie style smoker. They should open in about 3-4 weeks waiting for the inspectors to check everything out. I also told him about this site and they signed on while I was there. These guys are BBQers, they have been involved with Bad Bob's in NJ and have been to MIM on the Bad Bob team.
