I have to congratulate cancersuckschicago.com Scottie
not sure if he is Brethren or not.. But he is BBQ in my humble
opinion.. He lost his father on friday died of cancer and he
won the Jack on saturday. My heart goes out to him, But I'm
sure his dad was on the stage with him in lynchburg on saturday.
I read some where that his dad insisted that he go to the Jack.
I don't pray, but please think of Scotties dad when you congratulate
him on his great win at the Jack. This will be a week that he will
rememeber for the rest of his days. Pain and Joy we all love BBQ but
we love our families even more.

Everyone one at the Jack had a great time, despite some challenging rain, rivers under you pit and wind. It was incredible to see everyone gatthered. The friendships, mixed with a little smack talk and Gentleman Jack made it fun.

But on a serious side, I want you to know a little about Scottie (Grand Champ) and his family.

Scottie lost his wife to cancer, leaving two young children for Scottie to raise. He began a foundation to assist Cancer Research and help families affected by the tragic loss that cancer creates.

On Friday, Scottie was notified his father passed away from Cancer. Of course he was definately devistated. His father wanted him to cook the Jack despite how ill his father was.

There was not a team who did not offer to help Scottie in any way they could, and the best way was with prayers and hugs.

When Scottie (Cancersuckschicago.com) was pronounced Grand Champion, there was not a dry eye in the house.

It would be incredible if the Brethren members made contributions to his foundation to honor the champion cook and memorialize the loss of his father. Even you have not had the great privilege of know Scottie, he is part of our BBQ family. Go to

Wow... I was not aware Scottie's dad died Friday. For him to pull off a win at the Jack under such circumstances.... oh man, that just gives me goosebumps! Brothers, there's something at work there that is beyond words. Things like this that happen in this world just... I dunno... I'm in awe.

We had a great time, and we did get a call for 10th place dessert, was awesome to get a walk but would have preferred a jug! It was an incredible experience, just got back to CT a little while ago. Will be a lot of details in my blog tomorrow.

Scottie is indeed a class act..I have known him for a few years now and consider him a friend
He was the first person I met in the BBQ world a few years through another forum and has always been helpful and willing to share.
I also had the pleasure of helping him at the Carmel IN comp this year and have learned a lot about cooking BBQ comp style from him
A big congrats to him for overcoming many obstacles to win the Jack

One of the Chicago area morning drive radio personalities, Spike O'Dell on WGN Radio, is a foodie. Last week he was talking about the Jack and he said that he might drive down there. I don't know if he made it, but I sent him an e-mail to invite him to visit the next competition in the Chicago area and to let him know that a local Chicago team had won the Jack. This morning I received a call from Anna, Spike's assistant looking for more information on Scottie. I dug up Scottie's e-mail address from a post on another forum and sent him an e-mail letting him know about the call. Scottie will be interviewed on the Spike O'Dell Show on WGN Radio (the number 1 AM radio station in America according to ratings) on Monday, November 6th at 7:30AM, central time! How cool is that!
