Thanks Phil...

Just curious.... Does anyone know how the scores were determined per category ? Were they criteria equally weighted or was taste the most like the KCBS scoring system ?

I quickly learned that entering three categories the day before the big event really drains you, gives no time to settle in that day after set up and makes you begin prep for the other stuff much later and adds a lot of additional expense in meat/supplies besides the extra entry fee. Still it was fun and make us get our act together setting up real quick that morning. The charcoal that was given out was the worst I've ever used and now realize why teams just used the Kingsford or lump and did not stick to the rules. No one even checked to see if your grill was lit with the Purefire stuff. I think that hurt as as it burned horribly.

We took 8th place sauce and made the entire recipe from scratch adapting a Paul Kirk recipe that we felt needed a lot of tweaking after we first tried it. The bad part was we ended up needing to bring a ton of ingredients to make it all and it cost like $25 bucks for all the stuff to fill 6 little cups. I'm guessing most teams had a lot of stuff pre-made and mixed at the contest or just doctored up a bottled sauce. We put a tropical mixed fruit in the center with the cups around it and orange slices on the perimeter over the lettuce.

Our wings came in 19th. they were real good but asian style wings may not be best suited for a BBQ/grilling event. It was glaze made with soy sauce, honey, ginger, garlic, peanut butter, red pepper, and salt. We liked it. We prettied the box up with a 4 blooming scallions in the corners of the box.

Pork Chops came in 12th... I love that recipe... Best sirloin pork chops I've ever eaten but trying to put 6 sirloin chops in the box is very hard to make look pretty but we did not want to cut them to loose the moisture. We prettied them up with sesame seeds and marcishino cherries. What hurt was not having enough time to marinate the chops.

the leftovers made for a good lunch for us before we started the other prep work.

Re: Grill Kings Grilling Event

Vinny to answer your question we use a weighted system just like KCBS.

Dean

Thanks Dean... much appreciated.

My only suggestions specifically for the Grilling Challenge besides not having the charcoal early enough is that if the requirements are that teams are to use the PureFire Charcoal as you are promoting that brand as the sponsor then it is only fair that someone come around to the sites during the grilling to check that they are using that charcoal per the rules.

It doesn't matter if I don't like the charcoal personally, but it is not fair if some teams like us managed through it and others scrap it and use Kingsford, lump charcoal etc. that they are accustomed to.

Also, I'd probably also request that someone checks to ensure teams are making the BBQ sauce on site. It was called "Homemade BBQ Sauce" but I've got a gut feeling that many teams did not do that.

If checking for the homemade aspect is not feasible as I'm assuming that is harder to check than just charcoal brand, I suggest scrapping the BBQ Sauce category altogether and replacing it with a different entry like a meat, beans or grilled desert or grilled pizza category.

Just to make you feel a little better i feel the same way.I went by the rules purefire with no wood chip and made my bbq sauce on my weber Pete

OK NOW I'M PISSED!! Our scores aren't even on there - we showed up Saturday AM and we were not on the list for the grilling comp. Spoke to big guy at the gate and he said to tlak to Dean which I did. Dean said it was cool, went back to big guy, big guy made some notes on the list and gave us our containers.

I mande the best pork chop I've ever made (and not to break my arm patting myself on the back that's saying something) and we cranked out a really balanced sauce.

SHUT IT DOWN!!!!!

Re: Grill Kings Grilling Event

The Grill Kings Grilling Event was not sanctioned by NEBS. Mike I will call you offline to discuss your scores. For the rest of the competitors we have read your messages and we are putting plans in place to fix everything for next year.

Re: Grill Kings Grilling Event

Vinny,

Understood with the charcoal and BBQ Sauce we will definitely be changing the Grilling event around for next year, we have some real competition experienced people in place helping us for next year which we will announce shortly. They will see to it that next years event becomes much more team friendly. Thanks for hanging in there with us.

Regards,
Dean

Guys - My previous post was a bit tonge in cheek. I was being a bit of a wise ass. I don't think it is remotely necessary to issue any formal complaints. As it turns out, I think I owe Dean and the organizers an apology - I don't think I paid the proper amount which would have entered me into the grilling event.

Damn that was a good pork chop!!!

At any rate Dean sorry for the confusion and the post. I am sure that with the feedback posted on this site, and with the help of the competitors Grill Kings will be back and will be better then ever.

If I can help in any way you know my number.
