I did the same to my door and the mid section where the lid sits. can't see much harm in a better seal.

It's pretty tight where the drum meets the fire bowl. May need to remove that if it doesn't wear down some. Had to really push to get it in there.

Installed my new SS door with no gasket yet. Will give it a run or two before I decide if I need to add it on.

For those that say gaskets aren't needed, remember, each grill is different, just like each cook is different. What works on your grill may not work on mine. To each their own.
