I believe you are referring to any smoker like the backwoods, stumpsters, spicewine, etc. Essentially anything that is not a gravityfed, WSM/UDS or stick burner.
If so, a lot of people use them with massive success. I would venture to guess that backwoods is the winning-est smoker on the market. I used to own one and my second cook with it (and first competition cook) took 3rd ribs, 1st pork and 3rd overall.
