Default Large BGE question

When and how is the best way to add wood when using a platesetter. Is it best to bury when loading the lump? Is there a difference when using lump vs briquette?

Bury within and use lump is what I do.

It's recommended to only use lump in an egg, less ash and less nasties creeping into the ceramic.

You can bury a couple chunks in the coals if you want, it really doesn't matter. I prefer to throw them on top. I throw 2 lighter cubes on top, when they are burnt out I place a chunk on each lit spot. 30 minutes later or so once you get thin blue smoke your good to go.

You will find many folks who bury the chunks though.

A few chunks is all you need for most cooks. Maybe mix some in for a long (overnight cook). I'm not sure why folks add wood during the cook. Its just seems to be more trouble than necessary.

Definitely use lump. The egg won't can't accommodate all the ash from briqs.

During your cook if you need more smoke you can slide a small chunk of wood below the fire grate though the lower air intake...

I always use RO Lump in my Eggs. Only a few chunks are needed in the egg so I mix them into the lump.

LUMP ONLY! anyways, i use 3-5 fist sized chunks in my large egg.
