Default So I went and did it...

All said, I'm glad I found this place! (my wife may say different)

I started with a Smokey Joe with a mismatched pot to experiment. It worked fairly well.




Thoroughly impressed with the results after 9 meals or so, I've decided to upgrade!

So we ended up with this!







For future reference...18.5 diameter 30 gallon drum.


29.5 ish tall. Plenty of room!



Cut the lid out with this...



Ground down the 1/8th inch lip with a grinder. Smooth as butter!

Now I wanted to weld everything on the barrel, but the welder is at work. So, make hay while the sun shines!! Meaning I can't take my own pic while welding the tabs for grates.
Sorry.

Rough idea. 1 1/2 from the lip to the top grate.

Second grate at 8" from the lip, 3rd meant for a diffuser at 15".



Ready for a burn to get rid of the paint!

So now we end up with this, after a 3/4 ball valve and 3 3/4in iron nipples.




At this point, my wife thinks I'm nuts!

Maybe she's onto something!

A quick search on CL found some guy bailing on a 18.5 Weber with new grates!

Picked it up for $40. Tried to negotiate, but no dice.

Brought it home to look up the date code, and it's a 2011! With a new unused folding 18.5 grate! Link for dates found here...





Super clean for 2 years old, and cleaned up really well!



Pretty excited!

So we load this up...




The new creation, dubbed "Burnin' Bitz" is currently running at 240 burning some vegatable oil.

Just bought 38 pounds of ribs, butts, and tri tips to get things movin!

Test run tonight, hope to fire some Boston Butts in the morning!

Thanks guys!!

Hopefully I'll feel the need to upgrade again soon, but I'm sure two 18" racks will do for awhile.

9# butt split in two.

1/2 with salt and pepper, 1/2 with salt, pepper, and Daves Rib Rub.







My son and I love ribs, so we'll try these St Louis Style for dinner.
My wife isn't crazy about ribs(), so she'll get some of the 3# Tri Tip.




Gonna be an awesome day with some Q!

Just some 1x6's cut to the shape of the barrel. Maybe sticking 8 or 10 inches out from the barrel. Not 100% sure yet.

Plenty of things left to do, but didn't want to waste a 30 degree day with 20mph winds!
