Make it a true "reverse flow" and make the firebox the cooking chamber. Problem solved.

Cook meat in the fire box, sending the meat smoke into the meat you smoking, having double smoked meat

Well, back when I had my CharGriller with SFB ... I used to wish that the firebox was the meat chamber and the meat chamber was the firebox. In other words - that darned firebox was just too small. So, I can't fault the guy for wanting to make sure he had plenty of fire capacity!

Maybe he was from northern Cali when he built it and had to use sequoia splits and just eventually got tired of so much damn splitting ;)
