Default Help on cooking for 300

I'm cooking pork butts for about 300 people. Could anyone advise on how many pounds of pork butts will be needed.

Sandwiches or not? Lots of sides? I would go 1/2 lb pre-cook weight per person.

Best I can tell you is, I usually figure 25 people per 10 lb butt. That is also depending on how many and what sides are going to be going with it. If there is a bunch of different sides, you might not even use that much pork. If there are just 3 sides and a drink, then you might want to throw an extra butt on there just to be sure.

From some of the other forums here:

Cooked meat from butts are 40-50% of original weight.

Depending on what else you are serving, you could figure 1/3 to 1/2lb per person.

und zo.....300 people would theoretically consume 100 to 150lbs of pulled pork, requiring you to cook 200-300 lbs of pork butts.

Thanks I was thinking of cooking about 150 lbs as a guess. I've not cooked for this many before. We will serve sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers.

Like others have said you will yield much less than you start cook weight. I usually shoot for 50% to be safe. Then I go 6-8 ounces per sandwich.

I almost always figure # of people = # lbs of raw bone-in butts. 300 lbs in your example. Leftovers are good...running out of meat is not.

300 lbs raw weight. You loose 50% during the cook I like to serve 1/3 lb portions some eat more meat some more sides so it works out and leftovers are a good thing.
