Default Help with my UDS build please

Hey all,

So I am in the process of building a UDS here in the UK (right as the weather has changed to miserable and wet).

I found a drum online (eBay) and was told that although they sell lined drums I could request an unlined drum as they do have some stock.

Drum arrived a few weeks back but there was no indication on the paperwork or drum itself that its unlined. I opened the top and inside looked like its painted brown/red - is this a liner? The drum does say it used to have raspberry juice in it.

so skip to yesterday and I still don't know if this was lined (I now suspect it was/is). I drilled some vent holes and then lit a fire. I got it quite hot - burned through 4 pallets and lots of old tree wood at times it was glowing red in places.

To say I was a little disappointed today would be an understatement. The red/orange "paint" on the inside did not seem to have shifted in anyway. There was small sections where it was burnt away but not many.

So I decided to go at it with the angle grinder and some sanding discs (I used 10!). This was an absolutely horrible job. I was covered from head to toe in black dirt/dust. It's pretty much cleaned off now - I hit it with the pressure washer a few times as well through the process.

But I need to know if I should do more on the inside? Have I sufficiently removed enough? Also what I do with the inside? Do I paint it or just rub lard all over it?

Why did you use sanding discs vs using a wire brush attachment?

Don't paint the inside. From the looks of it I would season it up good and let the good times roll.

I had sanding discs left over from my VW beetle rebuild and no wire brush attachments so I used what I had to hand.

The discs (the flap ones) are useless on a curved surface, the useable part of the disc just wears away almost instantly. I don't recommend them for this job

give it a good wash inside with hot water and laundry detergent-rinse- dry it out- get it seasoned ....rock and roll

I get those drums that had juice in them at work everyday, they have a liner. If you were in the US, I would have given you one of them for free.

I wouldn't worry any longer. Looks like you are ready to finish painting the outside and then give it a good seasoning.

If you had kept that fire stoked red hot for 4-5 hrs it would have burned most it off, but not all. As is it is, looks like you are good to go. If you are still worried about it, light another fire in that bad boy and burn it again, you won't have to go for nearly as long this time. Then just wash it out real good and and rinse it thoroughly. Rub it with some fat (oil, lard, etc...) and light a fire. You should be good to go. They cook great, you will love it.
