Default Insects? Wood? BBQ?

Hi, All -- I just went to a local apple orchard and bought a bunch of wood off them for a cheap $20, but when I got home and chopped it up, I found a lot of the pieces had been bored out in the middle. I'm assuming it was insects even though a lot of these holes were filled with dirt??? Anyway, can I still use this for BBQ? The wood on the outside of the parts bored out by the insects looks fine.

Any thoughts will be helpful! Thanks!

Powder post beetles and ants can also do that. It's fine to use, but keep it away from any structures.
