New, unlined drums are the only way to go if you're willing to spend a few bucks and you have a local supplier. Can't imagine sanding, grinding, sandblasting and / or burning one just to get started. But then you don't have a reason to buy and use a weed burner!

My advice..Don't get rid of the offset especially if it is your first smokin' rig.

I got rid of my offset to make room for my Pit Barrel and UDS and regret it. I had it for a few years and cooked a ton of great meals on it. Yeah it was a piece of junk $50 Char-broil special bought off of CL but you will never have that "1st smoker" bond with any other cooker. Wait, maybe that's getting too sentimental..lol

Add to the family, don't kick kids out!
