That is a slick idea - glad you posted that! and, and 85 gallon tank! lotsa room there.

I like my domed lid I have because it gives me additional cooking space on top, plus it doesn't hold any water on top - no rust, and I can cook through rainstorms. But with an 85 gallon tank, you already have more headroom, and it's cool to just use the barrel lid.

Here are a few close ups on the rack system. Might make a bit more sence.

Borzwazie...... You may just change my mind on the lid idea. This drum is 27" across I think and if I could find a top I see no reason this UDS couldn't cook about 10-12 Butts. Anybody know if there is even a top that will fit a 85 gal drum.

Clever design! No more tilting of the lower grate to clear the upper mounting bolts.

I am guessing that the Weber 26" grill lid, or any round 26" grill lid would fit (or be close enough to hammer on).

This place might be able to help you with a lid, too (just a quick google search, I don't know anything about the place):

On the grates I didn't totally come up the idea. I seen a video where a guy used U bolds and welded U shaped inserts on his grates similar to what I did with angle. seemed like a good concept be I kind of liked my way better. Call me bias.

Got my tires on and mocked up my BGE vent. Also welded my foot on the front. Only have one small concern.... with the wheels under she sits a bit high. Not a huge problem but just an observation.

I hope to fab up some kind of table on the side. Got a few ideas but nothing solid yet. Also ordered some SS spring handles for the lid. If all goes well I hope to have it finished other than the top this weekend. I need some ideas as far as thermometers go. Need them to be accurate but also a good finishing touch.

Very slick, I like the outside the box thinking. Are you going to need a stepladder to get into that thing?
