Congrats to Grand Champion: SMOKIN HOGGZ BBQ - MA
Reserve Champion: 3 EYZ BBQ and all who walked and competed!

Great weekend, Great weather, Great Venue, Great Hosts: The Highland Rotary Club!!!

We had a great time and the Ridgefield Rotary Club, CT learned alot and will hopefully have a KCBS Contest in Ridgefield, CT next year.

Thank you Highland Rotary for mentoring us!

Yours in BBQ,

Cliff

PS Did I say Great?

Congrats especially to Renapoli Pizza 667.9428
for the 1st place win in grilling...he is a World Pizza Champion! WTG!

Congrats to all who walked, especially to Smokin' Hoggz who likes to wait until just before the Jack Draw to get that bung.

Nice contest, well run, nice venue, and hardly any flies this year. Now if we could figure out what the heck the judges did to our chicken and brisket. Maybe they imported the RI judges for this one?

congrats to smokin hoggz and 3eyez. it was a great weekend as far . aS hanging out with some good friendS. thank you to Gail for Friday night gailaritas andthe awesome spread you and the others put out. I went old school and competed solo with my original team name (south shore smokers) . experimented a bit with some of the categories and even went with my steak sauce brisket from back when I started which was fun  . as far as the contest I really don't care fo the rotary club. refusing me a damn little breakfast sandwich cause I couldn't find my ticket for it full knowing I was there solo was a bit tacky. I mean it breakfast , which is cheap to do.. and profiting on ice lousy too.

I thought you were down on your knees praying but I guess you were begging for an Egg Sandwich:laugh: We couldn't get in either without a tix, and they wouldn't even let us get our sandwich and bring the tickets back??? Have to say that is the only bad thing I have to say about the weekend!

Great contest everyone and congrats to all who walked. Nice job Smokin Hoggz and 3 Eyz.

Breakfast wasn't great but whatever. I had to walk back to find my ticket also. Plus the coffee never seemed to get done. Not to mention it's a little on the late side. I would prefer it to be closer to 7 than 8:30. Either way, we had a great time.

Ya, breakfast should be at 7. I didn't understand the whole ticket thing either. Other than teams, who else is going to be going to the breakfast tent? The event isn't open to the public yet, and vendors are not going there at 8:30AM to mooch a fried egg on a bagel.

Most contests that have a team breakfast don't have tickets. Eggs are cheap. It's the only time at the HVRF I thought they were channeling the Nashua West Rotary. :becky:

Congrats to Smokin' Hoggz for winning GC and thanks for the use of a thermapen, sweet new smoker too. Conngrats also to 3 Eyz for the RGC and everyone who got a call. Nice work Pop Bang Foods on their 1st contest and getting 2nd in pizza. :-D 1st time at the HVRF and I think I'll be back. Nice venue, great area and the organizers were on the ball.

Congratulations to Renapoli Pizza and Good Smoke on their NEBS GC and RGC – and to Smokin’ Hoggz and 3 Eyz on their KCBS GC and RGC!

Thanks to Good Smoke and Smokin’ Hoggz for letting us sample all of your grilling entries – The food was amazing! :becky:

We also enjoyed all of the “non contest” stuff as well… There were many “Gail-A-Ritas” and a lot of awesome food consumed Friday night, and a lot of sombrero action. And as someone said, Phil Vassar was “electrifying”. (you have to picture jazz hands when you read that)

Can’t wait for next year!

congrats to smokin hoggz and 3eyez. it was a great weekend as far . aS hanging out with some good friendS. thank you to Gail for Friday night gailaritas andthe awesome spread you and the others put out.
You should have came by would have given you our tickets sled or just fed ya
breakfast.

Ya, breakfast should be at 7. I didn't understand the whole ticket thing either. Other than teams, who else is going to be going to the breakfast tent? The event isn't open to the public yet, and vendors are not going there at 8:30AM to mooch a fried egg on a bagel.

Apparently last year they sold out of breakfast and a bunch of people didn't get any, so to limit the # of people getting breakfast - they came up with the ticket thing...

And I agree - 8:30am was a little late...

I have been to 8 of the 9 years they have had this contest and it has become more and more obvious to me that while this may be a great fund raiser for the rotary, it is far from being a team friendly event. In fact it seems to me more and more each that we aren't really much more than a distraction for them.

While the venue is very nice, getting there can be a pain unless you know the back roads, the payouts are very low and the entire event revolves around the public and not the teams. The bathrooms get locked up at night, the porta Jon's don't get cleaned until late morning and the volunteers driving the Rangers back and forth all day refuse to pick up the trash from teams and will even drive around it if you leave it out (trust me i tested it). Being refused breakfast for not having a ticket is absurd. The ice situation is ridiculous, having to pay a marked up price is adding insult to injury. It's also extremely annoying to be repeatedly told we aren't allowed to have our vehicles there (even if it is within your site) while the vendors and people doing demos drive in and out all day. I wasn't there 15 minutes and in the process of unloading on Saturday morning before I was asked if I was going to move my truck.

This is as close as it gets to being a hometown contest for me and where I did my first contest ever but I don't think that I will be back. There was a time when this was one of only 2 or 3 contests in NY but that has long since pasted. There are plenty of other contests around the region that have raised the bar in terms of being team friendly and I don't think this one has kept pace.

I skipped last year because they wouldn't open the gate until 6pm so I had to sit there for 20 minutes with no festival people even walking past me or near the gate. I thought this year was better, but I did keep my car over with the vendor vehicles! I don't like the bathrooms being locked over night either and the breakfast - just get us some good coffee, have it early and if you can't make a decent egg sandwich, just have donuts

I've only been in a few contests, but I've learned to always have a plan B breakfast even when a free one is offered. It can be as simple as having a guest @ your tent showing up around breakfast time that could possibly pick up something decent. That said, hearing what I have about this one, I doubt I would ever consider attending. Ice @ cost or free for teams is the only acceptable option. You can't seperate teams from their cars, then profit on ice when you know everyone's coolers will need a splash of ice to keep their food safe. Not fair and not team friendly. I've been to comps that have been on both sides of the spectrum and the team friendly ones are the ones I plan on returning to.

Congrats to Smokin Hoggz and all teams that walked. Thank you to the Rotary for once again putting on a good show. The event is held at the county fairgrounds and they ulitmately are the ones who shut the bathrooms down. We were asked to be a vendor at the last minute to fill in for someone who dropped out. I can assure you that we were told if our vehicle is parked out our site we are not to move it until after show hours. I am not sure which vendors where driving in and out all day as previously stated but it wasn't the us or the 3 other ribbers nearby. We were also instructed that we were responsible for removing our own trash as a vendor. The trash dumpsters couldn't be more than 100 yards from any of the competition sites. How much trash can you possibly have that you can't clean up after yourself and take the bag to the dumpster? We as competitors need to take some responsibility and clean up after ourselves. That is until your name is Myron Mixon or Johnny Trigg. Can't tell me there isn't 10 minutes in the day to walk the bag over. In the past we've gone to the supermarket in town to purchase ice at various events to save some $$. I do agree if they are going to close the bathrooms and have portapottys they should schedule a cleaning at night before the bathrooms close and again in the morning. But some responsibility needs to be on the teams too, I used the porta potty saturday night and and it was as if someone was trying to pee everywhere except in the toilet.
