Default Smokin' at the maples, some noobie questions.

Good evening all, Im going to be attending the smokin at the maples event this weekend and it will be my first time ever going to a bbq comp. I was hoping people could give me some tips to maximize my experience. I really want to try a lot of food, how do i go about sampling the goods? If i only go one day which is the better day to go and is it a kid friendly event? Answers to these questions and any other friendly sugesstions are greatly appreciated. thanks

It is family friendly and kids will be there as well, no rides or attractions as far as I know.
Vendors will be there offering all kinds of foods as well as bbq. Demonstrations are scheduled and there is always a lot of fun stuff going on. Teams are concentrating on getting ready for the grilling comp on Saturday, then prepping meats etc for cooking that evening/night for the turn ins on Sunday, chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. Feel free to visit except during crunch turn in times and you will have a good time. Unfortunately I am not cooking this one but will be there as a judge and hanging out. Otherwise I would say be sure and stop by.(even though I am a Cowboy fan long standing.) Don't be shy, introduce yourself around and folks will be glad to say hi. Enjoy,.

Try not to bother the teams from around 11 to around 1:40 on Sunday. That's when they are doing the final prep and turning in their food.

For the teams that are doing the grilling contest on Saturday, the same thing applies. About half the teams will be grilling.

Teams, in general, won't be sampling. They certainly won't be selling food. They will, however, be talking with friends, sharing food with friends and having a good time. Introducing yourself, mentioning the Brethren and asking questions about BBQ/grilling is a great way to become a friend.

Either day is good to come by but they offer different things. Saturday is a bit more relaxed and has the car show. Sunday has the true BBQ and the awards ceremony.

The best advice I can offer for someone that wants to get a feel for competition BBQ is to post in the official event thread expressing your interest and asking if any teams need assistance and would be willing to take on a new person.

If you stop by, I'll be the guy with the crutches near the VIP tent. Ask for Eric. I'd be happy to give you the nickel tour.

Eric

Generally we are not allowed to give samples to the general public. This is a rule established by the local board of health but if you stop by some of the teams after turn-in time they will usually share some of the left-overs. Definitely visit the teams before or after turn-in time and introduce yourself as there is a lot that can be learned if you listen. Unfortunately for you we are Jets fans so please do not stop by our site........Just kidding you are always welcome to stop by and visit with the Polocks.
