Smile My ECB Gourmet Mod

I've been lurking around in this forum for a while and I've seen lots of brethren who have modified their Gourmets into very workable charcoal smokers. So here goes my own attempt.
This is what I'm starting with.

I also have these re-purposed vents from an old grill that I found in my attic. (?).
Did I mention that I'm a bit of scrounger?

My plan is to make the following mods:
1) create an adjustable inflow vent in the charcoal pan.
2) add the 2 cannibalized vents to the lid for exhaust control
3) use fiberglass rope (already ordered) to seal the gap around the lid
4) install a grate of some sort to hold the coals
5) install an easy to read temp gage. (you may notice my gourmet has nothing, zero, nada in this area)

I have to mention this link, as have many others, as a fantastic tutorial for anyone considering this project.

Wish me luck and "more to come",

I have the exact same electric gourmet cooker as your's and did the mods a while back. It is a great little smoker now.
I plugged the side hole on the base where the electric element connected through and enlarged the hole underneath the base pan and installed a sliding draft door. Works perfectly.

Thanks for the kind words.
Carbon, I like your solution for the intake valve. If I had seen it an hour ago I would have probably used it.
I came up with something similar, all be it a little less elegant.

I drew a scale of full, half, and closed on the top side of the slider and I also used the legs as a stop point. Not too pretty on the eyes but I think it will be functional.

Heres a pic of the rest of my modifications.
Notice I have a temp gage installed and the intake adjustment is front and center.
I also got a pan to hold the coals.

I think I'm about halfway done.

Those mods will work quite well. You'll be amazed by it's performance (reason why I never upgraded to a wsm when I started smoking)

As for that side hole I riveted shut that hole with an aluminum plate.
