Many here have homemade drum smokers, you might want to do a search on the Ugly Drum Smoker (UDS) and follow the building instructions..

Have not seen one 'live', but the online pics show a pretty thin non-sealed door. I have built around 8 UDS smokers and having a good sealed drum is very important for regulating the temperature. It also enables you to close off all intake and extinguish the coals.
For the money I would stick with the standard UDS design or if you want to go with factory, a WSM bullet. It has a door too, but is better quality and can be sealed.

Judging by how warped that door is in the pic I suspect it's all made from ridiculously thin gage sheet metal.

That's the quality of product they're trying to sell for $300? No thank you.

I'll echo the notion you're prolly better off building your own UDS. It'll be cheaper too.
