Scores seem oddly high, not just at the very top of the chart either.
Wonder how many judges there were?? And how many were CBJ's??
And how many categories they judged - noticed there were a lot of side contests.

Any Brethren judges who were there??
 
Crazy scores for sure, a 689 got us 10th place! I'm fine with 10th given the teams we were up against though.
 
we were 100% certified. We did the unusual categories the first night and did anything butt and dessert only on the big day along with the four meat. It was an excellent group of cooks. Here is a list of the certified judges during the contest

Treasure Island categories were chili, sauce, and wild rice on Saturday night. the cooks really enjoyed wild rice. We had 19 teams do that and Treasure Island gave each of the 19 teams rice to replace what they used in their entries. We had 25 teams do chili and 31 entries in sauce. The two extra categories on Sunday were Anything Butt with 15 teams and 21 teams doing dessert. The cooks presented some great dishes and you could see that a number of them put a good deal of thought into their entries.
 
It was a great contest, excellent facility and very well organized. We cooked our hearts out and ended up in 16th place, which is not where we wanted to be. Like Doug said, all 4 categories around 170, but no walks. It was a fierce competition, still a great time.

I did run into a judge after the competition was over that told me she was the Simon Cowell of BBQ and never gives a 9. Hmmm . . . how deflating is that to think about. Oh well, judges!

It was a great competition for us. Not even close to a walk in the big 4 but, our scores did improve and it was insane to see how high your scores had to be to get a walk. Hope everyone enjoyed their goody bags. :becky:
 
The contest was great, especially the weather! What better way to spend Father's Day!? Seeing the teams there, I knew it was going to be a tough go. Then I got my score sheet. I couldn't believe what it took to get a call, just crazy! Just another typical contest in the upper Midwest for ya I guess. Congrats to Grills Gone Wild and to everyone who got a call, very impressive!

Wow. If you know the judges name, I would think you should let the organizer (and other organizers in her area) know this. A person with that type of attitude should not be judging. If you you were "lucky" enough to hit her table this weekend, then she could have had a big affect on your outcome at the contest.
 
I'd be curious what the reps and organizers said to the judges beforehand. In the past there have been cases where the reps and the organizers encouraged high scoring.
 
I table captained or as it was Treasure Island I was (argh) Pirate Captain.
I had a good crew of judges that were pretty tight on scoring and seemed fair with what was presented. There were judges from Canada and Texas. I believe Perry said we had a Master at each table as well as fresh Judges.
He knew it was going to be tight and asked that if you gave less than a 7 to fill out a comment card. My table had a few 6's but no cards filled out.
each category seemed to have a good curve/ cross section of end result. We never Judged the same box# they went to great lengths to make sure. We had three reps plus two more on a busmans holiday.

The grounds were fantastic and just overall a great event. I hope this one keeps flying.

Saw Tom da Butz and restocked my No Butz supply. Hope he did well in sauce entry.

Big Butz sauce came in 6th.

It was the first time I had our sauce Pig Lotion judged. Took 5th
 
I work hard at having good judges and also a percentage of new judges each year (approximately 20-25%) I learned that from Carlyle and the organizers of Owatonna, MN. They are fabulous and professional and I sure hope they don't mind me stealing their ideas.
If I ever hear of inappropriate actions or voting by a judge, I never have them back to any of me events. The organizers know each other and I hope they share that information with each other. We all want good judges and a mix of Master Judges, beginner judges but ALL FAIR JUDGES. I wish to thank all cooks and judges! The event was attended by some of the best teams in the nation and I hope that the judges I selected feel the same way. I did really encourage the "young" judges to talk to the veteran judges and learn judging "techniques" and to please justify the scores they entered on the ballots. GOOD JOB TO EVERYONE AND THANK YOU!!!
