Thumbs up first mini build

finally got around to building the mini I'll be giving to my dad...

decided to try using the steamer plate as the diffuser:

and, just to be sure it worked well, I took her for a test drive:

just a nekkid fatty to give it a bit of seasoning:

overall, it worked well, and was a pretty easy project...which is good, because I was just informed by my wife that I'll also be making one for my FIL

yeah, and it's a good thing too...after cooking on it once, I'm pretty sure I'll be making one for myself as well with the brand new SJG I picked up from CL a few weeks back

Thanks in advance!

I wasn't sure about that either, so I ran it wide open to see where it would get. I was able to get it up to 400° after ~30 mins. guess there's no good reason to cut out any of the steamer plate I shut it down after that, let it cool down, then ran it around 250° for the fatty--it held temp nice and steady...a lot like using my WSM

I love my mini. My motivation for making it was for smoking wood tests - smoking a variety of meats at one time using a single wood to see what wood works best for different meats. Since then I have discovered how useful it is in general. I use it more often than either of its big brothers!

For example, putting stuff on the top grate provides an indirect cook with even temperatures across the entire grate. It's a super little smoker but the capabilities go far beyond that.

A fatty is a perfect choice for a test run. Do you have plans for a full blown maiden voyage?

well...I'm giving this one as a gift, so I won't be cooking on it again
but after that quick test run, I'm sure I'll make one for myself--I do have an unused SJG I picked up a few weeks back for a song that's just begging me to turn it into a min
