Default USDA authorizes new names for meat

Bad news for teams with the word "butt" in their name - it's now a "Boston Roast". Just when you figured out what all those 350 cuts really are, they rename all of 'em. (For pork and beef anyway)

Chris,

Many thanks for sharing this article with us.

It was certainly an eye opener!

In an effort to boost sales just ahead of the U.S. grilling season, and make shopping at the meat counter a bit easier, the pork and beef industries are retooling more than 350 names of meat cuts to give them more sizzle and consumer appeal.

IMHO this is just another example of too many bureaucrats with too much idle time on their hands!

Of course, these new fancy names for the same cuts of meat will surely command much, much higher prices!

At least one section of the meat department will stay the same: A spokesman for the National Chicken Council said Wednesday that no such plans are in place to change the names of chicken cuts. A chicken breast, the official said, will remain a breast.

Thank Goodness the National Chicken Council still sounds rational!!!

Maybe they figured leaving it as "thighs" and "breasts" encourages more men to buy chicken

Ya, the new names are certainly clear things up! Pork chops are now "New York Chops", "Porterhouse Chops", "Ribeye Chops", and "Sirloin Chops". Naming pork chops after popular cuts of beef steak certainly won't confuse anyone!

Country style ribs, which of course are not ribs, are still called country style ribs, though I guess they will identify if they are from the shoulder or the loin.

It's not the names of the meat that are stopping people from buying, it's the prices. People buy meat because they need to eat. The majority of them base their buying decision on price per pound, not what the name of the cut is. If they can't afford it, they won't buy it.
