Question Has anyone Modded their Thermopens to read correctly...

Just another one of the pet peeves that us left handed people need to deal with the bias against us in our everyday lives...

Has any technically inclined lefty been able to mod a Thermopen from its flawed right hand usage to its more accurate left handed orientation?

Specifically, does anyone know if you can flip the display in a Thermopen?

I am getting sick of reading temps upside down when checking the temp of the meat.

And for any of the whackadoodles that enjoy trashing every thread anywhere which will of course blurt out "use the other hand", that is easier said than done.

You just got up this morning and went to the bathroom.

Did you use the other hand?

See, its not natural to make a conscious decision about something you do automatically.

Soooo,,, any technical people out there up to the challenge?

I was thinking of picking up some closeout Thermopens to open and try, but my electronics equipement is rather old (use to build Heath kits) and I was wondering if I am in over my head before I started.

If the display were inverted would that make the thermapen operative for you?
That might just be a simple (?) software thing.
IF having the display on the opposite side of the case would require a complete overhaul.

Why don't you contact thermoworks and let them know your thoughts. They may have never thought about your needs. This might open up a new market for them.
I'm curious...what is the percentage between left and right handed people?...off to google.

I believe he wants to stick it in then rotate it to see the display, but then the numbers are upside down. The software flip, if possible, would work.

Attach a mirror to it. Preferably a magnifying mirror for ease of reading. You could probably use that high magnification one that you use when going to the bathroom, but clean it first.

I had checked there, but the FAQ's babbled something about his wife or some lame chit:

Quote:
Interesting question. My wife Suzette is left-handed and she's always thought the opposite. She prefers to use her dominant hand to wield the roasting pan, grasp the food with tongs, stir, or whatever else she's doing in combination with the one-handed temperature measurement. Thus, in her opinion, it's best to hold the Thermapen in her right hand while she uses her dominant hand for the other tasks.
Don't buy that? While the Thermapen isn't quite as ambidextrously switchable as a screwdriver or a hammer, it's pretty close. It can easily be gripped in a number of ways. I hold my Thermapen in both my left hand and right hand depending on what I'm doing. Still I empathize with anybody who's left-handed and wishes the Thermapen were reversed. So, if our engineers can ever figure out a no-cost way to do that in the next Thermapen, we'll consider doing it. Meanwhile, switch-hit.

I've seen where he shows holding it with the probe between your pinky and ring fingers on your left hand and the display facing out and measuring that way. I'm sure you've seen that before, but that was the explanation I saw.

You've just given in to The Man

:)

Thanks all.

It was good to get an informal reading from the left side of the Brethren on such an issue.

Have you taken it apart yet just to see if the display can be flipped? It may be as simple as that if it's not hardwired to the circuitry.

Sheesh! If you don't want to clip it to the Thermapen, then at least consider this mod for your cooker. No UDS is complete without one. Lets you see all that meat without having to walk all round the cooker or move things around.

Lots of good reviews.
