Default Can you buy food at a BBQ competition

I've never been to BBQ competition and this is probably a dumb question. But, can you buy food from the contestants? Such as a half a rack of ribs or butt??

Most often... that question is defined by each contest organizer.

The majority of the competitors are working towards awards, bragging rights, and prize money only. That might conflict with local regulations, too... vending without proper permits or lisences. In most circumstances there may be other authorized BBQ vendors for the publics needs. Also there are other competitions which employ a "people's choice" opportunity to get a sample of their bbq.

Competitors are typically not allowed to sell food. However there are usually vendors who are not competing who sell BBQ and other food.

Many competitions do have a people's choice category in which competing teams give samples out to the public and they vote on which one they think is best. The voting is normally done by putting a donation in the team's jar. The team with the most money in their jar wins People's Choice. This money usually goes to a charity.

At every contest it's up to the organizer, local laws and the Health Department. What might be good in one town could get you nailed 10 miles away.
