Default Oklahoma/Arkansas Comps

Hey everyone. We are looking to expand our KCBS contest schedule this year. Being in North Texas, the OK and AR comps get our attention, as the drive isn't that bad. What are the popular, well run comps in those states? Is there a "Don't miss comp, it's in great location, well run....." ect? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

They are all terrible, no need to come up to any, don't waste your time

Seriously, only having a year under our belt we're going to hit a few more OK contests this year. We did Langley in OK last year which is a great cooks contest but might be a bit far for you.

As Hawg Father said Rogers is a good contest, check out past results to give you a flavor of the teams that come and the scores, but might be a bit of a haul for you guys.

Hot Springs is doing a first year event Kentucky Derby weekend where the cook teams are going to set-up on the infield of Oaklawn racetrack, should be cool. Fort Smith is a great venue put on by good folks and will get some support from the Sam's final teams chasing points.

History shows a lot of the top teams are in the area and are all around good people........from my experience, the promoters and venues don't disappoint and tend to cater to the teams.

OK Contest
Enid
Bixby
Tulsa
Ponca
Tecumsah
Stillwater
Claremore
Sallisaw

AR
Hot Springs
Ft. Smith

All of these are well run and have a good draw. Bixby usually has 90+ teams - only down side is horse street racing in the middle of the night.

Stillwater is an Elks contest and judging is Interesting, done it for the last 7 years but am going to bypass this year as the reps changed and the judges, while being CBJ's are members of the club and judge once a year and without a strong rep, go off in tangents which appeared to have happen last year.

Most of the contest will have a good selection of the top ten teams in the nation at them and offer challanges that allow for little leaway.

I have visited with the organizers for the Oaklawn Comp, and it will be first class here in Hot Springs. Will be in the infield during the weekend of the Kentucky Derby, with the race on a big screen. Also, they are having a free breakfast buffet for all the competitors.

Smoke on the Water in Pine Bluff in the fall is always a great time.

Springdale also puts on a great comp as does Wynne. These are all KCBS comps.

I haven't cooked Fayetteville, Jonesboro, or Rogers, but hear great things about all of them.

There are a few IBCA comps that are fun. Two are in Delight, one in Arkadelphia, and one in Glenwood. These aren't as large or as competitive, but a great time if you can make it.

Of course, we will have the Southern Krunk BBQ Festivus again next year in January here in Hot Springs.

I have cooked the Edmund, OK kcbc comp, and that one is well run and a lot of fun.

Best of luck out there!

I've cooked in Claremore, Bixby, Fayetteville, Hot Springs, and Rogers. All are well run contests with really good teams coming in for them. I can't cook in Fort Smith because I'm the organizer. We do try to run one of the best contests in the area. We do have a great venue (right on the Arkansas River) and you couldn't ask for a better time of the year in terms of temperature (October). Come on up in October and give us a try. I personally welcome every team and make sure they are taken care of.

And for those of you who said nice things about us, I sincerely appreciate it. The entry form will be available in the next 2-3 weeks.

We have cooked Bedford a couple of times.......it is one of my favorite contests every year. (and it doesn't hurt that we took 2nd in ribs and 11th overall in a stacked field! haha)
