Default Vintage Imperial Kamado CL Score

Many thanks to Swamprb for coaching me on this Kamado; would not have been confident without your advice!

Anyway:
amusing story for y'all.

I just picked up a vintage Imperial Kamado near milwaukee, Wi. After watching it on craigslist for 3 months and finally getting them into a reasonable ballpark, I went to look at it, and by god it was all intact, and not a crack to be found. All internals were solid also. replacement grill, possibly.

I empathized with them when they told me it was worth well over $500, and I explained that if confused with the space aged ceramics, one may think so. I brought a manual for the Kamado and told him that if we didn't make a deal, I would leave the manual with them to help them sell it to the next guy. I think they sort of 'got it' after that. She felt it was valued at nearly $1000 at that point, and I explained that it was only worth what someone is willing to offer. (OK, I may have played up the fragility and the 'not weather resistant' points a bit :-) )
I told them I was not going to play games, but I would be into it for $80. He checked with 'mother', and decided that for $100, it was mine. The deal was struck.

When I got home, I began searching the web for restoration ideas, and found this thread . . . . and I see an actual picture of MY Imperial Kamado! http://forum.bigsteelkeg.com/index.php?topic=6004.0

10 months of trying to sell it, boy there were stubborn. Glad the Keg guys wore them down for me.

Thanks Again Swamp!

now off to read every kamado restoration thread out here . . .

Swamprb is definitely the go to guy about old kamados. I would think the one you have there is from the late 60s. If its the full sized one you got a killer deal. I own one of the first ones made. It has handles on the top of the lid that makes me believe its from the early 60s making it 50 plus years old. I've been cooking on it for a couple of years and would not part with it now. I can cook 5 racks of BBQ ribs on it in 3 1/2 hrs at 220 degrees. They come out very moist and it just makes the best ribs I've ever had. Cook pork butts on it as well. The way it retains moisture inside the smoker is amazing!!

I know some people paint them but personally I think it takes away the character of the smoker and the value.
Collectors love Original paint.

Thanks guys. I sure am counting my blessings.
Now I am fabricating some grill mates off of naked whiz to provide two levels for either more payload or to hold a diffuser.

Silverfinger, mine is a medium, so maybe four ribs max IF I rolled them and stood them on end.
This thing is cute, and may be my go-to cooker when not doing the volume my UDS has, or the long burn overnights.

Now off to research paint types, althought it is in such good shape, I am in no hurry.

This is one a friend just gave me.
It's a little busted up in the bottom but I think I can repair that.
It's a smaller one like yours.
My big kamado has an 18" dia grill.
