Default double barrel smoker/grill?

So Im planning on building the double barrel smoker and was wondering what it would take to make it into a propane grill at the same time?!

My wife and I are closing on our new house in 2 weeks, and id like to only have one 'grill' so I wanted to see what everyone thinks about the addition...

It might be a stupid/unrealistic idea, but i figured its worth a shot.

You can find all the parts easily at Home Depot or Lowes.

You may not have asked for this advise, but I probably own one of the nicest double barrel smokers anywhere, two stainless drums... Then I built my UDS four years ago, and havent fired that double barrel once... night and day my friend.

I think trying to build a multi-purpose device will be a compromise that may not do either activity (smoking or gas grilling) very well.

I'm not a builder (other than my simple UDS) so I don't have any constructive advice for you. Good luck whichever way you decide to go. And congrats on the new house!

You only want one grill and you're on a bbq forum asking this question?!

Kidding aside I agree with the above posters. I t may be too much of a compromise trying to do a two in one setup. That's why so many of us own several different cookers. Different tools for different cooking tasks.

If it were me, I'd get a good gas grill with a side burner and hook it directly to the house line(tanks are a pain), and have a UDS. For a few years I had only these two tools and could handle most all grilling/smoking/cooking tasks.

There's a few concerns...

1. Have built a double barrel smoker way back when... before owning my first Lang offset. It is a nice contraption when assembled properly - however since it is a very thin-walled vessel; is also a short lifespan. And it was.... short-lived.

2. Adding a secondary aspect/propane line will endanger yourself and family. There have been many people getting hurt from of accidental propane explosions within a smoker.

Thanks for all of the input everyone... If it were up to me I'd have multiple grills and smokers...

I like the offset smoker idea for the large cooking area. My wife and I love to entertain, so I wanted to be able to smoke several things at the same time. I might end up getting a gas grill and a vertical smoker. something thats a little less 'ugly' (as my wife says) than a double barrel smoker.
